Catalina de Erauso, also known as La Monja Alfereña or 'The Nun with the Sword,' was a remarkable Spanish adventuress who defied societal norms and expectations during the 16th and 17th centuries. Born in 1585 in the Basque region of Spain, Catalina disguised herself as a man and joined a Dominican convent at the age of 16 to escape an arranged marriage. She soon grew restless within the convent walls and, using her quick wits and combat skills, she fled and began a life of adventure. Dressed as a man, Catalina traveled throughout South America, working as a soldier, a farmer, a miner, and even a priest. She gained a reputation as a fearless fighter and a skilled strategist, leading troops in battles against the Mapuche people in Chile. Her exploits were legendary, and she was said to have killed over 100 men in duels. Despite her successes, Catalina's secret was eventually discovered, and she was forced to flee once again. She eventually returned to Spain, where she lived out the rest of her days as a woman, writing her memoirs and living a quiet life.
