EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the enigmatic figure of Charles VI of France, also known as the "Well-beloved," who ruled from 1380 until his death in 1422. The King, born in 1368, was the eldest son of King John II of France and Joan of Bourbon. Charles VI's reign was marked by bouts of mental instability, which earned him the nickname "the Mad." Despite his afflictions, he was deeply loved by his people, who saw in him the embodiment of the French monarchy. In this portrait, Charles VI is depicted in regal attire, seated on a throne, with his queen, Isabella of Bavaria, standing beside him. Isabella, born in 1371, was the daughter of Stephen III, Duke of Bavaria, and Taddea Visconti. She was the second wife of Charles VI and played a significant role in the political and cultural life of the French court. The presence of Jean Froissart, the renowned chronicler and poet, in the scene adds an intriguing layer to the image. Froissart, born in 1333, was a contemporary of Charles VI and Isabella and chronicled many of the events of their reigns. His works, including the "Chronicles of France, England, and Spain," are invaluable sources of information about this period in French history. This print, which dates from 1435, offers a glimpse into the complex and fascinating world of the French monarchy during the late Middle Ages. It is a poignant reminder of the human side of history, showcasing the relationships and interactions between powerful rulers and their consorts, as well as the role of the chronicler in recording and preserving the past.
