Chechen Resitance fighter Abrek Zelimkhan killed
On 10th October 1905 Russian police shot into a crowd during a strike at an industrial plant in Grozny, Chechnya, killing 17 people. A week later Abrek Zelimkhan Gushmazukayev (1872-1913) held up a passenger train near Kadi-Yurt Station and had the same number of men shot. He continued his resistance fighter activities, becoming a Robin Hood figure amongst the Chechen people. Zelimkhan and his Ingush comrade-in-arms Sulom-Beck Sagopshinski, raided the Cossacks, Russian banks, Vladikavkaz mint, Czars post which was transported on the Georgian military highway, in order to restore justice and help the poor. Eventually surrounded on 27th September 1913 in Shali by a Dagestan Cavalry Regiment under the command of Lieutenant Kibirov, Zelimkhan was killed after a long struggle. His capturers proudly had their photograph taken with him as shown on this postcard. The inhabitants of Grozny and Vedeno were forced to pay 100, 000 roubles in reparation for the damage caused by Zelimkhan and his companions. Date: 1913

This haunting postcard depicts the defeated body of Abrek Zelimkhan Gushmazukayev, a legendary Chechen resistance fighter, following his death on September 27, 1913. The image was captured by the victorious Russian forces who surrounded and killed him near Shali, in Chechnya. The background story leading to this moment began on October 10, 1905, when Russian police opened fire on a striking crowd at an industrial plant in Grozny, killing 17 people. A week later, Abrek Zelimkhan, along with his Ingush comrade-in-arms Sulom-Beck Sagopshinski, retaliated by holding up a passenger train near Kadi-Yurt Station and executing an equal number of men. The resistance fighters continued their activities, becoming folk heroes among the Chechen people as they raided Cossacks, Russian banks, the Vladikavkaz mint, and the Czar's post along the Georgian military highway. Their actions were driven by a desire to restore justice and help the impoverished population. Despite their successful raids, Abrek Zelimkhan and his companions were eventually cornered by a Dagestan Cavalry Regiment under the command of Lieutenant Kibirov. In the ensuing struggle, Zelimkhan was killed, and his captors proudly posed for a photograph with his lifeless body, as seen on this postcard. The inhabitants of Grozny and Vedeno were forced to pay a reparation of 100,000 roubles for the damage caused by the resistance fighters.
