Chicago Worlds Fair - Convent of La Rabida

Chicago Worlds Fair - Convent of La Rabida - Square buildings, small windows. Part of Box 282 Boswell Collection - Chicago Exposition.. The Covent of La Rabida - The Exposition of 1893 gained over all other Worlds Fairs because of its commemoration of Columbus, a worlds hero. No spirit of national pride was hurt, and several European peoples were flattered by the extraordinary demonstration at Chicago. Chief among the honors paid to Columbus was the erection at Jackson Park of a reproduction of the Convent of La Rabida, at Palos, Spain, in which Columbus took refuge, and where he matured his plans of sailing due westward into the Ocean Sea. Date: 1893

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph transports us back to the Chicago World's Fair of 1893, where the Convent of La Rabida stood as a proud testament to the commemoration of Christopher Columbus. The Exposition of 1893, also known as the World's Columbian Exposition, was an extraordinary demonstration that gained recognition over all other World's Fairs due to its celebration of Columbus, a world hero whose spirit of national pride was not hurt, but rather flattered by the event. The Convent of La Rabida, a reproduction of the original in Palos, Spain, was a significant feature of the Fair. Columbus sought refuge in this convent during his final preparations for his westward voyage into the Ocean Sea. The convent in Chicago, with its square buildings and small windows, is depicted in this image, showcasing the intricate architectural details that were meticulously replicated for the Exposition. The Convent of La Rabida was just one of the many honors paid to Columbus at the Chicago World's Fair, which drew visitors from all corners of the globe. The Fair's success in celebrating the legacy of Columbus and promoting international unity made it a landmark event in history, leaving a lasting impact on the world.
