Brilliant Cerro Charge

EDITORS COMMENTS
Col. Harney's Brilliant Charge at the Battle of Cerro Gordo: A Moment of Victory in the Mexican-American War The Battle of Cerro Gordo, fought on April 18, 1847, during the Mexican-American War, marked a turning point in the conflict. In this pivotal engagement, the United States Army, led by Colonel John A. Quitman and Colonel Ethan Allen Hitchcock, clashed with Mexican forces under General Antonio López de Santa Anna near the town of Cerro Gordo in Veracruz, Mexico. The photograph you see before you captures the decisive moment of the battle, known as Col. Harney's Brilliant Charge. Colonel Robert P. Hughes, commanding the 4th Infantry Regiment, led the charge with great courage and determination. As the Mexican forces retreated up the hill, the American soldiers followed, firing their muskets and shouting battle cries. The photograph, taken between 1846 and 1848, shows the intensity and chaos of the charge, with soldiers in their blue uniforms and kepis charging up the hill, their horses rearing and kicking, and the Mexican soldiers in their brown uniforms and sombreros fleeing for their lives. The Battle of Cerro Gordo was a significant victory for the United States, as it allowed General Winfield Scott's army to advance on Mexico City and eventually lead to the end of the Mexican-American War. Col. Harney's Brilliant Charge became a symbol of American military prowess and determination during this period of American expansion. The photograph serves as a testament to the bravery and heroism of the soldiers who fought in this pivotal battle.
