24th Alexandria Assassinated Capture Colonel Ellsworth Elmer Fate Purpose Regt Sparrow Zouaves

EDITORS COMMENTS
Colonel Elmer Ellsworth, commanding officer of the 1st Regiment New York Fire Zouaves, is depicted in this poignant photograph taken around the year 1861. Ellsworth, known for his distinctive mustache and distinctive red fez, was a prominent figure in the early days of the American Civil War. He gained fame for leading his troops in the capture of Alexandria, Virginia, on May 24, 1861. Tragically, during this operation, Ellsworth was assassinated by a Confederate sympathizer named John Wilkes Booth. The inscription on the photograph, "He who noteth even the fall of a sparrow will have some purpose even in the fate of one like me. Elmer," adds a profound and reflective tone to the image. The phrase "He who noteth the fall of a sparrow" is derived from the Bible, specifically from the Sermon on the Mount in the book of Matthew. It speaks to the idea that even the smallest events in life have meaning and are part of a larger plan. Ellsworth's untimely death at the age of 24 was a significant loss for the Union cause. His bravery and leadership were admired by many, and his assassination was a shock to the nation. The photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the human cost of war and the fragility of life. Despite the tragic circumstances of his death, the inscription suggests that even in the face of such adversity, there is purpose and meaning to be found.
