EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures Commander Samson (8th July 1883 - 5th February 1931) and his fellow British airmen and officers, gathered together in October 1914, on the brink of a new and unprecedented era in military history. As one of the first four officers selected for pilot training by the Royal Navy, Samson made history as the first person to fly an aircraft from a moving ship. His pioneering spirit extended beyond aviation, as he also commanded the first British armoured vehicles used in combat. Transferring to the Royal Air Force upon its creation in 1918, Samson's leadership continued to shape the fledgling air force. He held command of several groups in the immediate post-War period and the 1920s, leaving an indelible mark on the development of British military aviation. The image of Samson and his comrades, dressed in their uniforms and gazing intently, exudes a sense of determination and camaraderie. Their faces bear the weight of the momentous responsibility they carry, as they prepare to take to the skies and revolutionize the face of warfare. This portrait offers a glimpse into the past, capturing the spirit of innovation and courage that defined the early days of flight and military aviation during World War I.
