Austria Bourbon Chambord Comte Exile Exiled Lives Places Pretender Stately

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative 19th century photograph captures the melancholic yet regal presence of Comte de Chambord, the Bourbon pretender to the French throne, in his Austrian exile at Frohsdorff. The Comte, whose given name was Henri, was the great-grandnephew of King Louis-Philippe I of France and a claimant to the French monarchy during the tumultuous Second French Empire. In 1848, following the abdication of King Louis-Philippe, the Second Republic was established, and the Bourbon dynasty was exiled from France. Comte de Chambord, however, refused to acknowledge the new republic and remained committed to his claim on the French throne. He spent the next several decades in exile, living in various European countries, including Italy and Austria. The photograph shows the Comte in the grandeur of his Austrian exile, residing at the stately home of Frohsdorff. The estate, located in what is now the Czech Republic, was a gift from the Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph I. The photograph's muted tones and intricate details highlight the elegance of the Comte's surroundings, with the ornate furnishings, grand fireplace, and ornate windows adding to the sense of opulence. Despite his exile, the Comte remained a symbol of hope and resistance for the Bourbon loyalists, who believed that he would one day regain the French throne. The photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the complex political landscape of the 19th century and the enduring power of royal lineages, even in the face of political upheaval.
