16thcentury Alteneck Armor Bavaria Brother Buckler Caparison Cuisses Jakobheinrichvonhefner Joust Lance Shield Tournamentbook

EDITORS COMMENTS
Count Ludwig, a nobleman from the Duchy of Bavaria, is shown in this stunning chromolithograph, knocked backward from his horse during a thrilling jousting tournament. Dressed in full armor, Count Ludwig wears a intricately designed helmet adorned with feathers and a visor, a large buckler shield on his left arm, and cuisses to protect his thighs. His horse, caparisoned in rich fabrics and adorned with heraldic symbols, rears up in surprise as the impact of the lance strike is felt. The tournament, depicted in this image from the "Turnierbuch" or Tournament Book by Jakob Heinrich von Hefner-Alteneck, published in Frankfurt in 1889, was a popular pastime among the European aristocracy during the Middle Ages and into the 17th century. These tournaments were not only a display of martial prowess, but also a showcase of fashion and pageantry. Count Ludwig's brother, Duke William V of Bavaria, is believed to have been present at this tournament, making it an even more significant event in the annals of Bavarian history. The intricate details of the armor, the lifelike depiction of the horse, and the dynamic composition of the image make this a captivating glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time of chivalry, honor, and pageantry.
