1098 Baldwin Baudouin Boulogne Crusade Crusaders Crusades Edessa Base

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures a pivotal moment in the First Crusade's history: the capture of the city of Edessa, in modern-day Turkey, by Crusader forces led by Baudouin de Boulogne, also known as Baldwin I, in 1098. The First Crusade, launched in 1096, was a military campaign sanctioned by the Catholic Church to reclaim the Holy Land from Muslim rule. The Crusaders, a diverse group of European knights and commoners, marched eastward, facing numerous challenges and hardships along the way. Upon reaching Edessa, the Crusaders, under the command of Baudouin de Boulogne, laid siege to the city. The siege was a turning point in the Crusade's fortunes, as the successful capture of Edessa provided the Crusaders with a strategic base from which they could launch further campaigns against the Seljuk Turks. The city's fall also marked the beginning of the Crusader States in the Levant, which would last for over two centuries. Baudouin de Boulogne, a French nobleman, played a significant role in the Crusade's military successes. He was a skilled military commander and a devout Christian, who led his troops with courage and determination. After the capture of Edessa, he was crowned the first Count of Edessa, marking the beginning of his reign as a Crusader ruler. This photograph, taken from Mary Evans Picture Library, captures the spirit of the Crusades and the determination of the Crusaders to reclaim the Holy Land. The image of Baudouin de Boulogne leading his troops into battle against the backdrop of the ancient city of Edessa is a powerful reminder of the historical significance of this period and the impact it had on European history.
