Tunstall's resistance to Henry VIII's religious policies led to his imprisonment in the Tower of London in 1534. He was eventually released in 1537, but was exiled from England in 1539. Despite his opposition to the king, Tunstall continued to serve the Church in exile, becoming the Bishop of Durham in 1543. He remained in this position until his death in 1558 or 1559. Tunstall's legacy as a defender of the Catholic faith and a champion of the Church in England during a tumultuous period of religious upheaval is still remembered today.
