EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite watercolor illustration depicts Dendrolagus lumholtzi, better known as Lumholtz's tree kangaroo, a remarkable marsupial native to the rainforests of New Guinea and northern Queensland, Australia. Commissioned by the renowned English naturalist, philanthropist, and collector, Lord Lionel Walter Rothschild, in 1936, this illustration is one of 27 pieces created by the skilled hand of Frederick William Frohawk. Frohawk, an English artist born in 1868, was a leading figure in the field of natural history illustration during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. His intricate and detailed works graced numerous scientific publications, including Rothschild's groundbreaking studies on tree kangaroos. The tree kangaroo in this illustration is shown gracefully perched on a branch, showcasing its remarkable agility and arboreal adaptations. With its long, powerful hind legs and prehensile tail, this macropodid marsupial is well-equipped to navigate the dense canopies of its forest habitat. As members of the Diprotodontia order, tree kangaroos are unique among macropodiformes, as they possess a more diverse diet that includes leaves, fruits, and flowers, in addition to their typical herbivorous fare of shoots and bark. Lumholtz's tree kangaroo, in particular, is known for its distinctive white fur on its face and chest, which helps to camouflage it against the lichen-covered branches of its rainforest home. This stunning illustration, created in 1937, offers a glimpse into the natural history of this fascinating and elusive marsupial, and serves as a testament to the artistry and scientific curiosity of both Frohawk and Rothschild.
