Derby recruiters sleeping at a recruiting office, WW1
Worn out Derby recruiters snatching some sleep at their offices after a busy night dealing with the final rush of recruits under Lord Derbys group system. Lord Derby, Director General of Recruiting in 1916 introduced the Derby scheme which encouraged men from the same offices or factories to join up together to form pals battalions. The scheme also divided men up into single and married and offered a war pension to those with dependents. As the prospect of conscription loomed, and with December 15th 1915 as the deadline for volunteering or attesting, recruitment offices found it difficult to cope with the crowds. Date: 1915

Derby Exhausted Office Offices Recruiting Recruitment Recruits Scheme Sleep Sleeping System Worn Attestation Attesting
EDITORS COMMENTS
This poignant photograph captures a moment of respite for weary Derby recruiters during the final rush of volunteering for the British Army in 1915. With the deadline for attestation looming on December 15th, recruitment offices were overwhelmed by crowds of men eager to join the war effort. Lord Derby, the Director General of Recruiting, had introduced the Derby Scheme earlier that year, which encouraged men from the same offices or factories to join up together to form 'pals battalions.' The scheme also divided men into single and married, and offered war pensions to those with dependents. Despite their best efforts, the recruiters were unable to keep up with the demand, leading to long hours and sleepless nights. In this image, we see recruiters taking a brief rest in a makeshift hut, surrounded by posters and papers, their uniforms rumpled and worn. The exhaustion etched on their faces speaks volumes of the intensity of their work during this critical period in World War I history. The Derby Recruiting Scheme played a significant role in increasing the number of volunteers for the British Army, ultimately contributing to the war effort on the Home Front and the Front Line. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the human cost of war and the tireless efforts of those who worked to ensure that men answered the call to serve.
