EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking photograph captures the determined and resilient spirit of Group Captain Sir Douglas Robert Steuart Bader, a renowned Royal Air Force flying ace during World War II. Born on February 21, 1910, Bader's heroic story began when he lost both his legs in a motorcycle accident at the age of 21. Undeterred, he defied the odds and went on to learn to fly, eventually joining the RAF in 1930. By the time World War II broke out, Bader had already amassed an impressive record as a pilot, including several aerial victories. Despite being a double amputee, he continued to fly and became one of the most successful fighter pilots of the war, shooting down a total of 22 enemy aircraft. This postcard, produced for the (Royal) Overseas League, was sent to troops along with cigarettes collected from schoolchildren during the war. The reverse side of the card bears the pre-printed message, "This card is sent to you with the compliments of the children of [School Name]," inviting the recipient to fill in their name and address and send it back with thanks. Bader's inspiring story of heroism and determination in the face of adversity is captured in this image, which shows him standing confidently in front of an aircraft, his artificial legs evident but not hindering his resolve. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC) in 1933 and the Companion of the Order of the Bath (CBE) in 1942, among other honors. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices and heroic efforts made by individuals during the war, and serves as a testament to Bader's unwavering spirit and determination.
