EDITORS COMMENTS
This intriguing illustration depicts a detailed drawing of a seal intestine, meticulously rendered by the renowned naturalist Edward Wilson during the Terra Nova Expedition to the South Pole (1910-1913). Wilson, a member of the British Antarctic Expedition led by Robert Falcon Scott, was an accomplished artist and scientist, known for his extensive studies of the natural world, particularly the wildlife of the Antarctic. Seals are a type of pinniped, or fin-footed mammal, belonging to the order Carnivora, which includes carnivorous mammals. This particular specimen is a placental mammal, meaning it nourishes its young with milk produced in the mother's body. Seals are further classified as Eutheria, or viviparous mammals, which give birth to live young, and as part of the larger group Theria, which also includes marsupials and monotremes. The intestine, a vital organ in the digestive system, is shown here in cross-section, revealing the complex structure of its various layers. The outermost layer, the serosa, protects the intestine, while the muscularis externa contracts to move food through the intestine. The inner layer, the mucosa, is lined with tiny finger-like projections called villi, which increase the surface area for nutrient absorption. This drawing offers a unique glimpse into the anatomy of a seal, providing valuable insights into the biology of these fascinating creatures. Wilson's meticulous attention to detail and commitment to scientific discovery during the Terra Nova Expedition continue to inspire and inform our understanding of the natural world today.
