EDITORS COMMENTS
Duke William IV of Bavaria, also known as "Willibald the Pious," was a prominent figure in the 16th century European aristocracy. This chromolithograph depicts a pivotal moment during one of the many tournaments he attended, showcasing his bravery and skill as a jouster. The image, taken from Jakob Heinrich von Hefner-Alteneck's "Costumes, Artworks and Appliances from the Middle Ages to the 17th Century," published in Frankfurt in 1889, captures Duke William IV being knocked from his horse during the joust. Duke William IV is dressed in full armor, including a kettlehat, a tall helmet with a wide brim that protected the head and neck, and a golden "W" monogram on the front. His suit of armor is adorned with intricate designs and embellishments, reflecting the opulence of the time. In his left hand, he holds a buckler, a small round shield used for defense, while his right hand grips a lance, ready for the charge. The tournament, or Turnierbuch, was a popular pastime among the European nobility, where knights and nobles would engage in various competitions, including jousting, to display their martial skills and chivalry. Duke William IV is shown here competing against his brother, Count Ludwig, with Albrecht Altdorfer's painting serving as the inspiration for this vivid representation. Despite the fall, Duke William IV's determination and courage are evident in this stunning image. The intricate details of the armor, the dynamic composition, and the vivid colors transport us back to the grandeur and excitement of the medieval tournament scene.
