1790 1843 1871 L Aw Pictured Ellenborough Governer

EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving captures the distinguished visage of Edward Law, 1st Earl of Ellenborough, during his tenure as Governor-General of India from 1842 to 1844. Born on December 21, 1790, in London, Law began his political career in the House of Commons in 1812, representing the borough of Ilchester. He rose through the ranks of the Tory Party, holding various positions in the government, including Postmaster General and Secretary of State for War and the Colonies. In 1842, Law was appointed as the Governor-General of India, a position that placed him at the helm of the British Raj during a tumultuous period. He arrived in India in January 1843, and his governance was marked by his efforts to modernize the administration and improve the infrastructure of the country. However, his tenure was also marred by conflicts with the East India Company and the native princes, leading to several military campaigns. Despite the challenges, Law's reforms had a lasting impact on India. He established the Indian Peninsula Railway, improved the education system, and initiated the construction of the Grand Trunk Road. Law's governance also saw the annexation of several princely states, including Satara and Jhansi, which expanded British control over India. The engraving, created in 1843, depicts Law in his regal attire, with a serious expression and a stern gaze. The image reflects the gravity of his position and the responsibilities that came with it. Law's governance of India lasted until 1844, after which he returned to England and continued his political career until his death on December 7, 1871.
