The choir is currently formed of ten men (who are either lay vicars or choral scholars), a team of about 20 boys and a team of about 20 girls. The cathedral accepted female choristers in 1995. Lincoln was only the second cathedral in the country to adopt a separate girls choir (after Salisbury Cathedral) and remains one of few who provide exactly the same musical opportunities and equal weekly singing duties to both girls and boys. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken circa 1900, showcases the Anglican Choir of Lincoln Cathedral, England. The main pillar in the foreground anchors the viewer's gaze, but the arched space beyond invites exploration. Stained glass windows, bathed in soft light, adorn the back and sides of the cathedral. The Lincoln Cathedral Choir, a cherished part of Box 144 in the Boswell Collection, is comprised of ten men, who are either lay vicars or choral scholars. In addition, there are approximately 20 boys and 20 girls who make up the choir. In 1995, Lincoln Cathedral became one of the pioneering institutions in the country to accept female choristers. The girls' choir was established after Salisbury Cathedral, and it remains one of the few cathedrals that offer identical musical opportunities and equal weekly singing duties to both genders. All the choristers are fortunate to receive their education at Lincoln Minster School. The choir's rich history and commitment to musical excellence are reflected in the dedication of its members, who have carried on the tradition for generations. This photograph offers a glimpse into the past, showcasing the timeless beauty of the cathedral and the devoted Anglican Choir that continues to bring music and spirituality to life within its hallowed walls.
