EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative black-and-white photograph, Enid, Countess of Chesterfield, is captured in the prime of her youth and beauty. Born on September 10, 1878, at Marske Hall in Yorkshire, Enid Edith Scudamore-Stanhope was an heiress who would go on to make a name for herself in the aristocratic world of horse racing. At just 21 years old, she married the eligible bachelor Edwyn Francis Scudamore-Stanhope, the 10th Earl of Chesterfield, in London. The Earl, more than twice her age, was a distinguished figure in society, and the union between the young countess and the aristocratic earl was a notable event. Following their marriage, Enid and her husband set up a stud farm, where they began breeding racehorses. Their dedication and expertise paid off when one of their horses, Sun Castle, won the prestigious St. Leger Stakes in 1941. Enid's involvement in horse racing was not just a pastime, but a passion that she pursued with great enthusiasm and success. This photograph, taken in 1904, captures the young countess in her elegant riding habit, with a confident and determined expression on her face. The photograph is a testament to her love for horses and her place in the aristocratic society of the time. Enid, Countess of Chesterfield, was not just a beautiful and fashionable aristocrat, but a trailblazing figure in the world of horse racing. Her legacy continues to inspire and intrigue, and this photograph offers a glimpse into a bygone era of British aristocracy.
