1792 Culpeper Fennel Foeniculum Hamilton Herb Herbal Joshua Nicholas Physician Vulgare Alexanders

EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored copperplate engraving, taken from Nicholas Culpeper's English Family Physician, published in 1792 by Joshua Hamilton, depicts two herbs commonly used in medieval and early modern European herbal medicine: Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) and Alexanders (Smyrmium clusatrum). Fennel, a tall, umbelliferous plant with feathery leaves and yellow flowers, has been valued for its aromatic seeds and leaves, which have a sweet, anise-like flavor and are used as a spice and herbal remedy. Historically, fennel was believed to aid digestion, relieve colic, and even act as an aphrodisiac. Alexanders, on the other hand, is a perennial herb with a rosette of broad, lobed leaves and yellow flowers. It was named for the ancient Greek city of Alexandria, where it was believed to have originated. Alexanders was used for a variety of medicinal purposes, including as a diuretic, to alleviate pain, and to promote sweating. The plant was also believed to have antiscorbutic properties, making it a valuable addition to the diets of sailors and soldiers during long voyages or campaigns. Both fennel and Alexanders were well-known in European herbalism, and their inclusion in Culpeper's influential herbal reflects their widespread use and importance in traditional medicine. The intricately detailed engraving, hand-colored with watercolors, provides a beautiful and accurate record of these plants, which continue to be used in modern herbalism and cooking.
