EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative print captures a pivotal moment in the First Serbian Uprising of 1804, marking the beginning of Serbia's successful wars of independence against the Ottoman Empire. In the foreground, the fearless Hajduk Veljko, one of the revolutionary forces' vojvodas (military commanders), leads his cavalry in a surprise attack on an Ottoman camp. With the element of surprise on their side, the Serbian rebels are seen breaching the camp's defenses, determined to make a significant impact on the course of history. The First Serbian Uprising, which lasted from 1804 to 1813, was a turning point for the Serbian people, who had been ruled by the Ottoman Empire for over three centuries, punctuated by brief Austrian occupations. During this period, Serbia experienced its first taste of independence, and Hajduk Veljko, born around 1780, became one of its most revered heroes. His leadership in the Negotin area was instrumental in the early stages of the uprising, as the Serbian forces sought to challenge the Ottoman Empire's dominance. This powerful image serves as a testament to the bravery and determination of the Serbian people during a critical period in their history, as they fought for their freedom and self-determination. The First Serbian Uprising ultimately led to the establishment of an independent Serbian state, paving the way for the modern-day nation.
