EDITORS COMMENTS
Francisco de Orellana: Spanish Explorer and Conquistador (c.1511-1546) This striking image captures Francisco de Orellana, a key figure in the Spanish conquest of Peru, as he stands proudly in his armor during the late 16th century. Orellana is best known for his historic expedition down the Amazon River in 1542, making him the first European to navigate its entire length. Born in Spain around 1511, Orellana joined the conquistadors led by Francisco Pizarro in their conquest of the Inca Empire in Peru between 1532 and 1534. After the conquest, Orellana was appointed as the governor of Quito, a position he held until 1539. In 1541, Orellana led an expedition to explore the Amazon Basin, which was rumored to be rich in gold and silver. He set sail with a fleet of five ships and over 600 men, including Gonzalo Pizarro, the brother of Francisco Pizarro. The journey was fraught with danger, as the explorers faced numerous challenges, including hostile indigenous tribes, harsh weather conditions, and the treacherous waters of the Amazon River. Despite these challenges, Orellana's expedition managed to reach the Atlantic Ocean in 1542, becoming the first Europeans to navigate the entire length of the Amazon River. This achievement brought significant attention to the potential riches of the Amazon Basin, leading to increased Spanish interest and colonization in the region. Orellana's legacy as an explorer and conquistador is an important chapter in the history of the Spanish conquest of South America. This image, taken from the late 16th century, captures the determination and courage of a man who helped shape the course of history.
