Francisco Gómez de Sandoval y Rojas, Duke of Lerma (1552-1625), was a Spanish cardinal and statesman who rose to prominence as the favorite of King Felipe III. Known for his remarkable incompetence and mismanagement, Sandoval's tenure as the king's chief advisor was marked by a series of disastrous policies and scandals. Born into a noble family, Sandoval entered the Church and was made a cardinal in 1599. He quickly gained the favor of Felipe III, who appointed him to various important positions, including the post of the king's chief minister in 1605. Sandoval's tenure as the king's right-hand man was marked by a series of missteps and mismanagement. He was accused of nepotism, favoritism, and corruption, and his policies often led to economic hardship and political instability. One of Sandoval's most notable failures was his handling of the War of the Jolly Boys, a rebellion in Catalonia that began in 1625. Sandoval's attempts to quell the rebellion were ineffective, and the conflict dragged on for years, causing significant damage to the region and draining the royal treasury. Despite his many failures, Sandoval remained a powerful figure at court until his death in 1625. He was eventually posthumously exonerated of some of the charges leveled against him, but his legacy as a bungling and ineffective favorite of the king remained.
