11th Baronet Conservative Jenkinson Samuel

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures Sir George Samuel Jenkinson, 11th Baronet (1817-1892), a prominent British Conservative politician of the late 19th century. Known for his imposing physical presence and formidable political acumen, Jenkinson earned the moniker "The Colossus of Roads" due to his significant role in the development and improvement of the British road network. Born into the noble Jenkinson family, Jenkinson entered Parliament in 1847 as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Morpeth. He served in various government positions throughout his political career, including Postmaster General, President of the Board of Trade, and Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster. However, it was his tenure as the President of the Board of Trade from 1866 to 1868 that brought him the most recognition. During this time, Jenkinson oversaw the implementation of the Turnpike Acts, which led to a vast expansion and modernization of the British road system. Jenkinson's dedication to improving transportation infrastructure extended beyond roads. He was also a strong advocate for the development of railways and supported the construction of the Metropolitan Railway, the world's first underground railway. His political achievements earned him a knighthood in 1887. This photograph, taken in 1875, captures Sir George Samuel Jenkinson in the prime of his political career. Dressed in the formal attire of the time, Jenkinson exudes an air of confidence and authority. The photograph serves as a testament to his significant contributions to British politics and infrastructure development during the Victorian era.
