Artillery Frankau Gilbert Novelist Novelists Poetry Poets Writers

EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait captures the intense gaze and resolute demeanor of Gilbert Frankau, a remarkable writer and war poet who served in the British Army during World War I. Born in 1884, Frankau enlisted in the 9th Battalion of the East Surrey Regiment at the outbreak of war and later transferred to the 107th Brigade of the Royal Field Artillery, where he served as a gunner. His experiences on the battlefield would later inspire the novels he wrote, having fought in some of the major battles of the British Expeditionary Force in France. Before being invalided out and given a posting in Italy, Frankau contributed to the satirical newspaper, The Wipers Times. With the family business failing to survive the war, Frankau turned to writing full-time. This photograph, taken in 1916, captures Frankau in his military uniform, adorned with the insignia of his rank as a Captain. The image serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by soldiers during the Great War and the transformative power of art and literature in capturing the human experience. Frankau's poetic works continue to resonate with readers today, offering a unique perspective on the historical events that shaped the world we live in.
