Heinrich Christopher Freiherr von Liber (1707-1788), a prominent German statesman and diplomat of the 18th century, is depicted in this beautifully colored engraving from the Universal History, published in 1885. Liber was born in Kulmbach, Bavaria, and studied law at the University of Leipzig. He began his political career in the service of the Duke of Saxe-Gotha, and later served as the ambassador to the Court of St. James's in London. Liber's greatest achievement came during his tenure as the Chancellor of the Duchy of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg from 1755 until his death in 1788. During this time, he played a key role in maintaining the peace and stability of the duchy during the turbulent years of the Seven Years' War and the French Revolution. Liber was known for his diplomatic skills and his ability to navigate the complex political landscape of Europe. He was a member of the Imperial Diet and played a prominent role in the negotiations that led to the Peace of Hubertusburg in 1763, which ended the Seven Years' War. This engraving, which is part of a larger series of historical portraits, captures Liber in the prime of his career.
