EDITORS COMMENTS
In this 16th-century illustration, we find Heinrich Schmid, a brave and skilled Swiss halberdier, proudly displayed in his full battle regalia. The meticulously hand-colored print, created by E. Lechevallier-Chevignard and expertly lithographed by A. Didier, L. Flameng, and F. Laguillermie, is an exquisite example of historical detail and artistic craftsmanship. Heinrich Schmid, a representative of the Swiss Confederation's renowned military prowess, is depicted wearing the traditional armor of the Swiss halberdier. His armor, made from interlinked plates, covers his chest, shoulders, and arms, leaving his legs exposed to allow for greater mobility. The halberd, a versatile weapon combining the functions of a spear and an axe, is held firmly in his right hand, while his left hand grips the shield, shielding him from enemy attacks. The intricate details of the print reveal the meticulous attention to historical accuracy. The halberdier's helmet, adorned with a crest, covers his head, while a gorget protects his neck. His gauntlets, embellished with intricate designs, shield his hands from the harsh blows of battle. The richly textured fabric of his doublet and hose, along with the vibrant colors of his sash and plume, add a touch of elegance to his otherwise utilitarian attire. This illustration, part of Georges Duplessis' "Costumes historiques des XVIe, XVIIe et XVIIIe siecles" (Historical costumes of the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries), published in Paris in 1867, offers a fascinating glimpse into the past, allowing us to appreciate the fashion and military history of the 16th century.
