EDITORS COMMENTS
Plate 1: Hexaprotodon liberiensis, the Liberian Pygmy Hippopotamus, from Recherches pour servir à l'histoire naturelle des Mammifères, Vols. 1-4 (1868-74), by Dr. Henri Milne-Edwards (1800-1885) and Dr. Alphonse Milne-Edwards (1835-1900). This exquisite 19th century print depicts the Liberian Pygmy Hippopotamus, a heavy-bodied, even-toed ungulate and an endemic species of East Asia. The animal is shown in daytime, resting on the banks of a river or lake, with its powerful jaws closed and its eyes half-closed in repose. The Liberian Pygmy Hippopotamus, also known as Choeropsis liberiensis or Hexaprotodon liberiensis, is a member of the Artiodactyla order and the Epitheria subclass. It is distinguished by its small size, with adults measuring only 1.2 to 1.5 meters in length and weighing up to 150 kilograms. This aquatic herbivore was once widespread in the forests and grasslands of West Africa, but is now considered critically endangered due to habitat loss and poaching. This stunning illustration, produced during the height of the European colonial era, is a testament to the remarkable natural history research conducted by the Milne-Edwards brothers, who dedicated their lives to the study of the animal kingdom. Their meticulous observations and detailed documentation continue to inform modern scientific understanding of the natural world.
