Cruiser Eclipse Minerva Protected Ww 1

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the HMS Minerva, a second class protected cruiser of the Eclipse class, anchored at the shores of Sicily during World War I. Launched in 1895 and scrapped in 1920, the HMS Minerva was a proud addition to the British Royal Navy during a time of global conflict. However, her most notable contribution to history occurred prior to the war, when she played a crucial role in the relief efforts following the devastating earthquake and tsunami in the Strait of Messina on December 28, 1908. The earthquake, measuring 7.2 on the Richter scale, struck the regions of Calabria and Sicily, causing widespread destruction and loss of life. The HMS Minerva, under the command of Captain H.C. Richards, was one of the first foreign vessels to arrive on the scene, bringing much-needed aid and assistance to the affected population. For their efforts, the crew of the HMS Minerva were awarded the Medal of Merit for Participation in the Relief of the Earthquake in Calabria and Sicily, an honor bestowed by the King of Italy, Vittorio Emanuele III. This photograph, taken in 1917, serves as a poignant reminder of the HMS Minerva's humanitarian mission and the important role that the British Royal Navy played in the relief efforts following the earthquake and tsunami in the Strait of Messina over a decade prior. The image captures the ship's majestic presence against the backdrop of the Mediterranean Sea, a testament to the bravery and compassion of those aboard who answered the call for help in a time of need.
