Imre Thokoly, also known as Emmerich Thokoly, was a Hungarian rebel and claimant to the Hungarian throne who allied himself with the Ottoman Turks against the Habsburg Empire in the late 17th century. Born in Transylvania in 1657, Thokoly rose to prominence during the chaos following the death of Emperor Leopold I in 1705. Seeking to free Hungary from Habsburg rule, Thokoly declared himself king and sought the support of the Ottoman Sultan, who saw an opportunity to expand his influence in Europe. In this striking portrait, Thokoly is depicted in the regal attire of a European monarch, wearing a crown adorned with feathers and a fur-trimmed robe. His piercing gaze and determined expression convey his unwavering conviction in his cause.
