EDITORS COMMENTS
Isabella I of Castille and Leon, also known as Isabella the Catholic, was a remarkable monarch who ruled over the Spanish kingdoms from 1474 until her death in 1504. This stunning sculpture captures the essence of Isabella's regal presence and pious nature. Born in 1451, Isabella ascended to the throne at the young age of twenty-one following the death of her mother, Queen Isabella of Portugal. During her reign, she married Ferdinand II of Aragon, uniting the crowns of Castille and Aragon and creating the powerful Spanish monarchy. Isabella is most famously known for her role in the completion of the Reconquista, the long-standing campaign to reclaim the Iberian Peninsula from Muslim rule. Her determination and unwavering faith led to the fall of Granada in 1492, marking the end of the Islamic presence in Spain. This historic event also paved the way for the discovery and exploration of the New World by Christopher Columbus, which further expanded Spain's influence and power. Isabella's reign was also marked by her strong commitment to the Catholic faith. She supported the Inquisition, which aimed to purge heresy from her kingdoms, and she played a significant role in the Council of the Church in Toledo, where important decisions were made regarding the Catholic Church in Spain. This beautiful sculpture, a decorative piece in any setting, serves as a reminder of Isabella I of Castille and Leon's significant contributions to Spanish history. Her legacy continues to inspire and intrigue scholars and history enthusiasts alike, making her an enduring figure in the annals of European history.
