EDITORS COMMENTS
Isabella I of Castile, also known as Isabella the Catholic (1451-1504), is depicted in this stunning 16th century print. Born in Madrigal de las Altas in Castile, Isabella ascended to the throne of Castile in 1474, following the death of her mother, Isabella of Portugal. Her reign marked a significant period in Spanish history, as she became the first monarch of the House of Trastamara to rule both the Kingdoms of Castile and León. Isabella's reign is most notably remembered for her role in the completion of the Reconquista, the centuries-long Christian reconquest of the Iberian Peninsula from Muslim rule. In 1492, she and her consort, Ferdinand II of Aragon, signed the Alhambra Decree, which expelled the Jews from Spain, marking the end of Jewish life in the country. Isabella's reign was also a time of great cultural and intellectual flourishing. She supported the works of Christopher Columbus, who discovered the Americas in 1492, and sponsored the translation of the Bible into Castilian, known as the Alcalá Bible. Her court was a center of learning and the arts, attracting scholars, writers, and artists from across Europe. In this print, Isabella is shown in regal attire, wearing a crown and holding a scepter, symbolizing her power and authority as queen. The inscription at the bottom reads 'Isabella, by the grace of God, Queen of Castile and León.' This image serves as a testament to Isabella's significant impact on Spanish history and her role as a powerful and influential monarch of the 15th and 16th centuries.
