EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph from circa 1903, two elegant Geishas, adorned in their traditional Japanese attire, gracefully make their arrival at a friend's home. The Geishas, who were renowned for their artistic talents in music, dance, and conversation, were an integral part of Japanese society during the Meiji period. The Geishas are dressed in stunning kimonos, intricately designed with vibrant patterns and rich colors. Their hair, meticulously styled in elaborate updos, is adorned with accessories such as combs, hairpins, and ornaments. One Geisha carries a parasol, or "umbrella," made of paper, while the other uses a round, circular fan to shield herself from the sun. They both wear round, wooden clogs called "zori" and "geta," which are traditional footwear for Geishas. As they approach the wooden steps leading to the entrance of the home, the Geishas bow deeply in greeting, showing respect and courtesy to their hostess and her guests. The scene is further enhanced by the beautiful circular window, which allows a glimpse into the interior of the home and adds to the serene and tranquil atmosphere. This photograph offers a unique glimpse into the rich history and culture of Japan during the early 20th century. The Geishas' arrival at their friend's home is a testament to the importance of social position and the intricate roles they played in Japanese society. The image is a beautiful reminder of the elegance, grace, and artistry that defined the Geisha tradition.
