This evocative photograph captures John Elliot Burns (1858-1943), a towering figure in the history of the British Labour Party. Burns, affectionately known as 'Johnny' or 'J.R.', is seen here in a serious and contemplative mood, with furrowed brow and hands steepled in front of him. He was criticized for his handling of the miners' strike of 1932 and his support for free trade, which put him at odds with some Labour MPs who favored protectionism. Burns resigned as leader in 1935, but remained an influential figure in the party until his death in 1943.
