1826 Kimberley Lieutenant Wodehouse 1902

EDITORS COMMENTS
["John Earl Kimberley, 1st Earl of Kimberley (1826-1902), also known as John Wodehouse, was a prominent British statesman and politician of the late Victorian era. Born on February 2, 1826, in London, Kimberley was educated at Eton College and Trinity College, Cambridge. He began his political career in the Conservative Party, but later joined the Liberal Party, serving as a Member of Parliament for several constituencies. In 1866, Kimberley was appointed as the Secretary of State for War and the Colonies, a position he held until 1868. During his tenure, he played a key role in the Second Anglo-Afghan War and the Morocco Crisis. He also oversaw the establishment of the Royal Irish Constabulary and the reform of the Irish land system. In 1874, Kimberley was appointed as the Colonial Secretary, a position he held until 1880. During his time in this role, he played a significant part in the expansion of the British Empire, particularly in Africa, where he oversaw the annexation of Bechuanaland (now Botswana) and the establishment of the British protectorate in Zululand. In 1885, Kimberley was appointed as the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, a position he held until 1892. During his time in Ireland, he worked to improve the living conditions of the Irish people and to promote economic development. He also played a key role in the land reforms that followed the Irish Land War. Kimberley's political career came to an end in 1895, when he was forced to resign due to his involvement in the Marconi Scandal. He died on March 26, 1902, at his estate in Norfolk, England. This photograph captures John Earl Kimberley in later life, dressed in the robes of an earl, a testament to his distinguished political career and his service to the British Empire."]
