1760 1834 Descendant Penn Pennsylvania Proprietor Stoke

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative portrait captures the distinguished visage of John Penn (1760-1834), a notable figure in American and British history as the last proprietor of Pennsylvania, a position once held by his ancestor, William Penn. John Penn was the great-grandson of William Penn, the Quaker founder of Pennsylvania in 1681. The image, dated around 1795, depicts Penn in the prime of his life, with a stern yet thoughtful expression, dressed in the fashionable attire of the late 18th century. Born at Stoke Park, Buckinghamshire, England, John Penn was educated at Eton College and the University of Edinburgh. In 1784, he succeeded his father, Thomas Penn, as proprietor of Pennsylvania. During his tenure, he worked to resolve longstanding land disputes and improve the economic conditions of the colony. Penn's efforts led to a period of prosperity and growth, with the establishment of new industries and the expansion of agriculture. Despite his successes, Penn faced numerous challenges, including political unrest and financial difficulties. In 1794, he was forced to sell much of his American land holdings to pay off debts. Penn continued to manage his remaining interests in Pennsylvania until his death in 1834. This portrait, a testament to John Penn's legacy as a distinguished descendant of William Penn and the last proprietor of Pennsylvania, offers a glimpse into the life of a man who played a significant role in the history of both America and England during a pivotal period in their shared history.
