John Singleton Mosby: The Gray Ghost of the Civil War This image captures the enigmatic figure of Colonel John Singleton Mosby, a legendary American soldier who served with the Confederate forces during the Civil War. Born on February 16, 1833, in Virginia, Mosby would go on to command Mosby's Partisan Rangers, a small but effective cavalry unit known for their daring raids behind Union lines. Mosby's Rangers, also referred to as the "Gray Ghosts," were notorious for their stealth and surprise attacks. They wore Confederate uniforms but often blended in with their surroundings, donning civilian clothes and even disguises to infiltrate Union camps and outposts. Mosby himself was a master of disguise, often passing undetected among Union soldiers. The photograph depicts Mosby in his late years, with a stern yet thoughtful expression. His military career had ended, but his legend lived on. Mosby retired from the military in 1865 and returned to civilian life. He died on February 3, 1916, at the age of 82.
