EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored botanical illustration showcases the Jointed-pedicelled Friesia, Friesia peduncularis, as it was depicted in Sir William Jackson Hooker's Curtis's Botanical Magazine in 1846. The illustration was meticulously drawn and lithographed by the renowned botanical artist, Walter Hood Fitch. The Jointed-pedicelled Friesia is a beautiful orchid species native to South America, specifically to the Andes Mountains. The plant's unique feature is its pedicels, which are swollen at the joints, giving the plant its name. The illustration captures the intricate details of the Friesia's flowers, which bloom in clusters on long, arching spikes. Each flower consists of a series of sepals and petals, arranged in a distinctive pattern. The labellum, or lip, of the flower is large and flat, adorned with numerous small warts and hairs. The column, which supports the pollen-bearing anthers, is long and slender, and is surrounded by a ring of tiny, glandular hairs. The illustration's historical significance lies in its connection to Sir William Jackson Hooker, who was the director of the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew from 1841 to 1865. Hooker's Curtis's Botanical Magazine was one of the most prestigious botanical publications of the time, and Fitch was one of its most accomplished illustrators. The publication of this illustration marked an important contribution to the scientific record of the Jointed-pedicelled Friesia, and helped to advance our understanding of this fascinating orchid species.
