During this time, Jonathan, the third son of Mattathias, emerged as a crucial leader. He led the Jewish forces in battle and negotiated with the Roman Senate for support against Antiochus IV. In 160 BCE, following the death of his father, Jonathan was appointed high priest and ruler of Judea. He continued to lead the Jewish people, maintaining their independence from the Seleucids for over a decade.
