1763 1814 Beauharnais Empress Gerard Josephe Josephine Marie Napoleon Necklace Tascher

EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking image captures Marie Josèphe Rose Tascher de Beauharnais, Empress of Napoleon I, adorned in regal splendor. Born in 1763 in France, Josephine began her life as a member of the minor French nobility. Her marriage to Alexandre de Beauharnais in 1779 brought her into the higher echelons of society, but her husband's involvement in the French Revolution led to their arrest and imprisonment. Napoleon Bonaparte, a rising military star, intervened on their behalf, and in 1802, he divorced Joséphine and married her, elevating her to the status of Empress of the French. In this portrait, taken between 1763 and 1814, Josephine wears the Imperial Crown of France, a magnificent diadem encrusted with diamonds, rubies, and emeralds, and the necklace of the Order of the Annunciation, a symbol of her position and power. Josephine's reign as Empress was marked by her patronage of the arts, her support of Napoleon's military campaigns, and her efforts to promote a cult of imperial glamour. However, their marriage proved to be childless, and Napoleon eventually sought a divorce to marry Marie-Louise of Austria. Josephine was exiled to the Château de Malmaison, where she continued to live until her death in 1814. This image serves as a reminder of the complex and fascinating life of Marie Josèphe Rose Tascher de Beauharnais, a woman who rose from obscurity to become the Empress of the French, leaving a lasting impact on French history.
