King George VI in his ceremonial robes by Matania

A triptych of paintings by Fortunino Matania of King George VI dressed in his ceremonial Coronation robes. These paintings were adapted from three done of King Edward VIII for his Coronation. However, due to the fact the King abdicated before he was crowned, the ILN asked Matania to adapt the picture and re-draw the heads with that of King George VI (see picture number 10555106 for the original). The same was done with a special Coronation portrait of King Edward VIII by Albert Collings for the same publication. Collings re-drew the head of the portrait with that of George VI. Date: 1937

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this triptych of paintings, King George VI is depicted in his ceremonial Coronation robes, as rendered by the renowned Italian artist Fortunino Matania. These works of art were originally commissioned by the Illustrated London News (ILN) for the Coronation of King Edward VIII, which took place in 1937. However, due to Edward's unexpected abdication just weeks before the event, the paintings were re-purposed for George VI's Coronation instead. Matania, known for his intricate and detailed depictions of royalty and regalia, expertly adapted the paintings to feature the new monarch's likeness. The result is a stunning representation of King George VI, clad in the traditional ermine-trimmed robes and holding the sceptre and orb. The solemn and regal expression on the King's face conveys the weight of responsibility and duty that comes with the monarchy. The triptych is a testament to the enduring tradition of the British monarchy and the importance of the Coronation ceremony. The intricate details of the robes, the regal ermine, and the symbolic objects held by the monarch all contribute to the grandeur and majesty of the scene. The paintings were originally created for the ILN, and although they were adapted from the Coronation preparations of King Edward VIII, they have become a significant part of the visual record of King George VI's Coronation. These works of art, which showcase the skill and artistry of Fortunino Matania, offer a glimpse into the rich history and tradition of the British monarchy during a pivotal moment in its history. The triptych stands as a reminder of the continuity and resilience of the monarchy, even in the face of unexpected change.
