EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite engraving depicts Knightia excelsa, also known as rewarewa, a stunning flowering plant native to New Zealand and Australia. The illustration is an engraving after an original drawing by the renowned Austrian botanical artist Ferdinand Bauer, as published in the Transactions of the Linnean Society Vol. 10, Tab 2. P.194, in the late 18th century. Knightia excelsa is a tree belonging to the Proteaceae family, which is part of the larger group of Angiosperms, Dicotyledons, or flowering plants. More specifically, it is classified as an Eudicot, Angiospermae, Magnoliophyta, and a member of the Dipsacales and Proteales orders. The plant is also related to the Caprifoliaceae family, which includes honeysuckle, and is an Asterid and Eudicotinae. Rewarewa is an iconic tree in New Zealand, known for its beautiful pink to red flowers that bloom in clusters. The tree can grow up to 15 meters tall and has a distinctive, smooth, grey bark. The leaves are long, narrow, and glossy, and the tree produces small, round fruits that are edible and sweet. The engraving captures the intricate details of the plant's leaves, flowers, and bark, providing a glimpse into the rich biodiversity of the Southern Hemisphere during the 18th century. Ferdinand Bauer's meticulous work continues to be an invaluable resource for botanical research and appreciation, showcasing the beauty and complexity of the natural world.
