EDITORS COMMENTS
This image, titled 'Plate 1 from The Eruption of Krakatoa' by G.J. Symons, offers a glimpse into the raw power and fury of nature during the early stages of the cataclysmic eruption of Krakatoa in 1888. Krakatoa, also known as Krakatau, is an igneous landform located in the Indonesian archipelago, in the Pacific Ocean. The eruption, which occurred on August 26, 1883, was one of the most violent and destructive volcanic events in recorded history. The photograph captures the billowing clouds of ash and debris that rose high into the sky, blotting out the sun and casting a veil of darkness over the region during the day. Molten lava, glowing fiercely in the daytime, can be seen flowing down the sides of the volcano, adding to the chaos and destruction. The extrusive rock formations, created by the violent extrusion of magma during the eruption, can also be observed in the foreground. This historic image, taken from the nineteenth century, provides a fascinating window into the past and the incredible forces that shape our planet. The eruption of Krakatoa caused widespread devastation, with waves reaching as far as 40 kilometers inland and killing an estimated 36,000 people. Today, Krakatoa remains an active volcano, serving as a constant reminder of the power and unpredictability of nature.
