EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcolored woodcut print captures the distinctive attire and traditional accessories of a Kurdish man as depicted in Auguste Wahlen's "Manners, Customs and Costumes of all the People of the World," published in Brussels in 1845. The man is shown wearing a tall, conical hat, known as a jeq, which is a hallmark of Kurdish ethnic identity. The tunic, or zunbun, is a long, flowing garment that reaches down to the ankles, often adorned with intricate embroidery. The pantaloons, or shalwar, are wide-legged trousers that are tucked into the tops of the boots. The man is also carrying a musket, a common weapon during the 19th century, and a powderhorn slung over his shoulder. In his hand, he holds a pipe, which may be used for both smoking and heating water for tea. The turban, or peshkabz, is wrapped around his head and held in place by a silver band. Jean Francois Nicolas Loumyer, the artist, skillfully captured the intricate details of the man's clothing and accessories, showcasing the rich cultural heritage of the Kurdish people. This print offers a glimpse into the past, providing a window into the fashion and traditions of the 19th century. The use of handcoloring adds depth and vibrancy to the image, making it a beautiful and intriguing piece of historical art.
