EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph print, sourced from Mary Evans Picture Library, captures the enchanting and intriguing story of Lady Eleanor Butler and Miss Ponsonby, two intrepid women who defied the conventions of their time and lived together as companions and lovers for over 50 years, in the picturesque village of Llangollen, Wales. Born in 1757 and 1739 respectively, Lady Eleanor Butler, a member of an Anglo-Irish aristocratic family, and Sarah Ponsonby, an Irish heiress, met in 1778 and soon discovered their deep connection. In 1779, they eloped together, leaving behind their respective families and societal expectations, and settled in the quaint village of Llangollen. They adopted the Welsh language, dressed in traditional Welsh clothing, and became known as the 'Ladies of Llangollen.' The photograph shows the ladies seated in their parlor, surrounded by the trappings of their domestic life. Lady Eleanor is seen sitting in a high-backed chair, her hands resting on a small table adorned with a vase of flowers and a cat. Miss Ponsonby, dressed in a simple, yet elegant gown, sits on a low stool, her hands holding a book. The shelves behind them are filled with an eclectic collection of books, reflecting their diverse interests and intellectual pursuits. The butler, a constant presence in their household, stands in the background, his expression one of quiet attentiveness. The photograph, taken in 1829, just two years before Lady Eleanor's death in 1831, offers a glimpse into the lives of these remarkable women and their unconventional love story. The Ladies of Llangollen continue to captivate the imagination of people around the world, their story a testament to the power of love and the human spirit. This photograph print is a beautiful reminder of their enduring legacy and the rich history of Llangollen.
