Leicesters Roman forum reconstructed
Reconstruction drawing by Alan Sorrell of the city of Leicesters Roman forum in Roman times. The Roman remains excavated by Kathleen Kenyon in 1936, beside the Roman-era Jewry Wall in Leicester, were initially thought to be a Roman forum, with the Jewry Wall part of a basilica. However, later excavations showed that the site was probably a bath complex and the Jewry Wall part of that. The Illustrated London News in 1937 shows the restoration as the forum and basilica. Date: 1936

1. Title: A Glimpse into Leicester's Ancient Past: Alan Sorrell's Reconstruction of the Roman Forum and Basilica This evocative reconstruction drawing by Alan Sorrell transports us back in time to Leicester, England, during the Roman era. The image depicts the Roman forum and basilica, as they were believed to have appeared around 1800 years ago. The remains of this ancient site were initially excavated by Kathleen Kenyon in 1936, and were initially thought to represent a Roman forum with the Jewry Wall forming part of a basilica. However, subsequent excavations revealed that the site was more likely to have been a bath complex, and the Jewry Wall was in fact part of that complex. Despite this new discovery, the 1937 issue of The Illustrated London News published this reconstruction, showcasing the forum and basilica interpretation. The drawing, created by Alan Sorrell in the 1930s, masterfully captures the grandeur and intrigue of Roman architecture. The forum, with its open-air marketplace and colonnaded walkways, would have been the heart of the Roman community in Leicester. The basilica, a large, columned hall, would have served as a civic and judicial center. Today, the Roman remains in Leicester continue to fascinate visitors and scholars alike, offering a glimpse into the rich history of this British city. This reconstruction drawing by Alan Sorrell provides a captivating visual representation of Leicester's Roman past, allowing us to imagine the bustling marketplace, the lively debates in the basilica, and the daily life of the Roman community.
