EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcolored copperplate stipple engraving depicts the Little Filesnake, Acrochordus granulatus, a fascinating reptile native to the waters of Africa, India, and Southeast Asia. The illustration is taken from Jussieu's Dictionnaire des Sciences Naturelles, published by F. G. Levrault between 1816 and 1830. The artwork was created by the skilled hand of Jean Gabriel Pretre (1780-1845), a painter of natural history at Empress Josephine's zoo and later the artist to the Museum of Natural History in Paris. Pretre's meticulous attention to detail is evident in the intricate patterns and textures of the Little Filesnake's scales, which are rendered in stunning detail through the stipple engraving technique. The snake's body is coiled gracefully around a rock, its head raised and eyes fixed intently on an unseen prey. The background is adorned with aquatic plants and other underwater flora, adding to the sense of depth and realism. The engraving was executed by the skilled hands of Massard, under the direction of Turpin. The use of handcoloring adds a vibrant and lifelike quality to the image, bringing out the rich colors of the snake's scales and the vibrant hues of the underwater world. This beautiful illustration is a testament to the artistry and scientific accuracy of the natural history illustrators of the early 19th century. It provides a fascinating glimpse into the natural world of over two centuries ago, and remains a stunning work of art and scientific record to this day.
