Loch Assynt, Calda House and Ardvreck Castle, Sutherland, north west Highland, Scotland. In 1726, the Clan MacKenzie constructed a more modern manor house nearby (in the foreground in this view), Calda House, which takes its name from the Calda burn beside which it stands. The house burned down under mysterious circumstances one night in 1737 and both Calda House and Ardvreck Castle stand as ruins today. Date: circa 1910s

EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: "Loch Assynt's Haunting Past: Calda House and Ardvreck Castle, Sutherland, Scotland" Amidst the breathtaking beauty of the northwest Highlands in Scotland, the tranquil waters of Loch Assynt reflect the remnants of a captivating and mysterious past. In this evocative image from the 1910s, the loch's shimmering surface mirrors the ruins of Calda House and Ardvreck Castle, two historical landmarks steeped in intrigue and legend. Calda House, a more modern manor built by the powerful Clan MacKenzie in 1726, stands proudly in the foreground. Named after the Calda burn that flows beside it, the house was a symbol of the clan's wealth and influence. However, its existence was short-lived. One fateful night in 1737, the manor house was engulfed in flames under mysterious circumstances, leaving only ruins behind. In the background, the ominous Ardvreck Castle, a 15th-century fortress, looms over the loch. Its imposing stone walls and towering turrets have withstood the test of time, bearing witness to centuries of history. The castle was once the stronghold of the MacLeods of Assynt, a rival clan to the MacKenzies. The two clans' disputes and power struggles may have contributed to the mysterious fire that destroyed Calda House. Today, these haunting ruins stand as poignant reminders of the rich and complex history of the Scottish Highlands. The tranquil waters of Loch Assynt reflect the past, offering visitors a glimpse into a time of clan rivalries, power struggles, and the passage of time. The haunting beauty of Calda House and Ardvreck Castle continues to captivate and inspire, inviting us to ponder the mysteries of the past.
