Despite these crises, he maintained a steadfast commitment to upholding British interests and maintaining the peace. In 1857, he was awarded the Order of the Garter, the highest order of chivalry in the British monarchy, in recognition of his exceptional service to the country. After stepping down as Prime Minister, Aberdeen continued to serve in various capacities in the House of Lords until his death in 1860. His passing was mourned by many, and tributes poured in from across the political spectrum. The Illustrated London News, in an obituary published shortly after his death, hailed Aberdeen as "one of the most eminent statesmen of his time," and praised his "unwavering integrity and devotion to duty."
