EDITORS COMMENTS
In this striking portrait, the late Earl of Aberdeen, George Hamilton-Gordon (1784-1860), is depicted in the prime of his distinguished career. The photograph, taken by Maull and Polyblank in 1860, captures the nobleman's stern yet thoughtful expression, reflecting the wisdom and experience that came with his many years of public service. Born into the Scottish aristocracy, Aberdeen rose to prominence in British politics as a member of the Whig Party. He served as Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs from 1852 to 1854, during which time he attempted to resolve the Eastern Question, the complex and volatile political situation in the Ottoman Empire. Although his efforts ultimately failed, Aberdeen's diplomacy earned him the respect of many, and he went on to become Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1855 to 1858. During his tenure as Prime Minister, Aberdeen faced numerous challenges, including the Crimean War and the Indian Mutiny. Despite these crises, he maintained a steadfast commitment to upholding British interests and maintaining the peace. In 1857, he was awarded the Order of the Garter, the highest order of chivalry in the British monarchy, in recognition of his exceptional service to the country. After stepping down as Prime Minister, Aberdeen continued to serve in various capacities in the House of Lords until his death in 1860. His passing was mourned by many, and tributes poured in from across the political spectrum. The Illustrated London News, in an obituary published shortly after his death, hailed Aberdeen as "one of the most eminent statesmen of his time," and praised his "unwavering integrity and devotion to duty." This portrait of the late Earl of Aberdeen, with its solemn yet dignified air, serves as a fitting tribute to a man who dedicated his life to public service and left an indelible mark on British history.
