EDITORS COMMENTS
Major Ranjisinghi Jamsaheb of Nawanagar: A Princely Cricketer in Uniform This evocative portrait captures Major Ranjisinghi Jamsaheb of Nawanagar, also known as Ranji, in 1915 during his recovery from a serious grouse shooting accident near Scarborough. Born in 1872, Ranji was an Indian prince who received his education at Trinity College, Cambridge, and went on to become a renowned cricketer, representing the Sussex English cricket team. Ranji's life was marked by a unique blend of royalty and sporting prowess. He succeeded his cousin as Maharajah of Nawanagar in 1906, and when war broke out in 1914, he answered the call to duty, serving in the Indian cavalry during World War I. This photograph, published in The Sketch magazine, showcases Ranji in his military uniform, a testament to his commitment to both his princely duties and his love for cricket. The image captures the essence of a man who embodied the spirit of the era – a time when the aristocracy and the sporting elite intertwined, and the lines between war and peace, duty and pleasure, were not always clearly defined. Ranji's life was filled with both triumphs and challenges. He led his troops bravely in the war, and returned to his beloved cricket field after the conflict. His legacy as a cricketer and a Maharajah continues to inspire generations, bridging the gap between the rich history of India and the enduring appeal of the game of cricket.
